Thunder Bay Airport is proud to announce it’s partnership with the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program, an international initiative dedicated to helping people with non-visible disabilities, feel recognized, understood, and supported.
By joining the program, Thunder Bay Airport reinforces its ongoing commitment to accessibility and inclusion for all travellers. The Sunflower symbol, which is displayed on a lanyard— allows individuals with hidden disabilities to signal to staff that they may require additional assistance, patience, or understanding while navigating the airport.
“We are very proud to bring the Sunflower Program to Thunder Bay,” said Jackie MacDonald, Director of Business Development and Revenue Management at the Thunder Bay International Airports Authority. “For many travellers, disabilities aren’t immediately visible, and that can make asking for help difficult. This program gives people a simple, dignified way to communicate their needs, and helps our staff at the airport provide more compassionate and thoughtful service.”
Passengers can request a Sunflower lanyard at the designated airport locations, which are the accessible check-in desk on the main floor, or the airport authority main office. All relevant airport staff have received training to recognize the Sunflower symbol and offer appropriate assistance in a respectful, understanding manner.
“Joining the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program is an important step in our continued efforts to create a welcoming and accessible airport for everyone,” said Graham Ingham, President and CEO. “Air travel can be stressful for anyone, but particularly for those who face unseen challenges. The Sunflower Program empowers our team to make a meaningful difference in each passenger’s journey.”
The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program began in the United Kingdom at London Gatwick Airport and has expanded to airports, transportation hubs, and public venues worldwide. Thunder Bay International Airport joins other Canadian airports in implementing the initiative, contributing to a more inclusive travel experience across the country.
